Week 2 Research topic 1 - Martial Arts

My first research topic is Martial Arts.





To start the research I first wondered, why is Martial Arts found all over the world and in many different cultures. Well, there are the main core belief is that martial arts is the development of hand-to-hand combat for fighting and self-defense purposes. This was predominantly in times of violence across the world and people need a way to protect themselves or to conquer in war. They were developed to use the human body efficiently to harm people for combat and fitness. Especially in modern times where Martial arts are used in the military for combat, but for everything outside the military are more used for Fitness and sports.


Importance can be seen in Martial Arts as consistent training not only conditions the mind and body to have strength and stamina to fight back in a violent situation but also helps the body fight disease, and stay flexible, strong, and active as people age. Martial arts provide stress relief and ways to release pent-up energy.​

It also provides confidence to people that might feel scared of certain situations and allows them to take some control back with self-confidence and understanding of certain situations that they might find themselves.

Participants in martial arts have been shown to have lower blood pressure and heart rates

because of its similarity to H.I.I.T. (high-intensity interval training), martial arts can improve overall heart health, lower cholesterol, and provide more regulated blood sugar and insulin levels.)

Martial artists enjoy all the physical benefits of regular exercise without having to run on a treadmill or lift weights. It's a great option to improve your health.


All martial arts require spacial awareness and coordinating movement with another person. Some martial arts even include the use of props and tools.

All of these factors improve the coordination and awareness of the participant's body as well as the people and objects around them.

Practices like Kempo encourage the lower part of the body to act as a base from which the upper body can maneuver and operate – this idea has been borrowed by many martial art systems including Krav Maga.



Why are Eastern Martial Arts so popular in the West?


One of the main reasons why eastern martial arts has gained so much popularity in the west is due to a multitude of reasons. Some of them are due to the fact that it's good for fitness so parents would take their children to martial art classes or due to the fact that it's a fun activity to do. But the main reason why it's become so popular is because of movies. Names like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan are the most prominent people for martial arts in movies so much so that almost everyone has heard of them due to their reputations and quality in movies. Because people see them doing stuff in movies they get curious and start to practice martial arts as they get inspired by them to start learning more about this world.
